Sugarhouse Homestead -Living simply and running a creative business off-grid

In 2017, I set myself the task of travelling from Sydney to Perth in a bid to escape my job as a barista, and see more of the beautiful coast of Australia. I found myself a rusty old van for a 'cheap' $3000, and began spending hours on Instagram researching tiny houses and motorhomes. I convinced myself it was for the ultimate backpacker adventure, when really I was just dying for a renovation and create a home away from home!

Then I discovered Sugarhouse Homestead.

These guys have it made! Living in a forest in Vermont on a 10-acre maple grove. Their set up consisting of a cabin, bath house, chicken coop, potting shed and fully functioning ceramic studio. Imagine a lifestyle living and working totally remotely, whilst taking a bath in a forest, harvesting fresh eggs from your own chickens and drinking coffee in bed from the mug you threw on the potters wheel next door.

And speaking of ceramics, they have the most amazing collection of goods, available through their online shop Sugarhouse Ceramic Co. From plant pots to ceramic paint palettes, hand carved wooden spoons and even a tray that holds your spliff. They also run workshops, not to mention, they are excellent at drawing and illustrations, they have a published book called 'tin can homestead. I am considering ordering a speckled travel mug to add to my slowly growing collection of handmade mugs.

The thing which inspires me most is the quaintness of it all. Slow living and little rituals which make you feel a sense of wholesomeness, like you are connected to nature around you. Coming home from a day of creative, soothing work to a hot bath, looking out at the stars from your porch under string lights and snuggling up in front of the wood stove (which was most likely chopped down themselves).

In my opinion, it's the perfect spot for weddings or to rent for a retreat on Airbnb. It's small enough to feel cosy but with enough space to totally get lost in nature. I imagine life slows down and days become intentional.

Similar things are happening in Joshua Tree, California, with vintage Airstreams available as short term holiday rentals. Seriously cool desert glamping.

All I know is, to me that seems like the PERFECT life. Make sure you check out my attempt at a campervan renovation on my portfolio.
