Blacksmith by The Stella Collective - Hospitality design inspiration

I was recently flicking through my quarterly subscription to Fete Life Magazine, when I came across an article which grabbed my attention. VERY aesthetic images featuring a bar / restaurant / function space named Blacksmith, situated in NSW in a lakeside town called Mulwala.

I immediately scanned the pages and disected each image, to understand what it was that really captured my attention. Here is my love list:

Textured bricks and large arched crittal doorways, nautical inspired V groove panelling and raw wooden decking. Traditionally elegant features like black ceiling fans, simple lighting sconces and 3D wayfinding details. Tall barstools pulled up to a large open servery allowing for alfresco dining whilst watching handmade pizza dough being stretched. Black steel wall shelving stacked with locally selected wines, raw ceramic earthenware stacked up on the bar and large leafy plants. Communal outdoor wash basins with marble splash backs and classic style wall taps, statement metallic lighting pendants with aged metal finishes. Quirky cocktail glasses waiting to be instagrammed against speckled terrazzo table tops. Grand fire pits and log burners with stacks of raw offcuts.

Here's an idea behind design brief:

'The brief was incredibly detailed, but mostly, it was to be ever changing with the morning and the nights, as well as the seasons. It needed to be classic and timeless but with a touch of rock'n'roll! Our space is constantly evolving and changing as we see fit.'

The team at The Stella Collective had to offer a neutral backdrop, which could adapt to visual and social changes dictated by the visitor. Something that felt relaxed enough to enjoy in the daytime: a lazy Sunday by the pool, catching up for coffee with friends, but could also evolve into a fireside evening drink or a romantic date night.

In my opinion they achieved this aesthetic through their sophisticated choice of materials and textures. Earthy honest materials which nod to their geographical location (The lakeside club largely hosts guests from the local boating community). Raw vs refined textures help elevate the shift from daytime to night. Other elements including communal alfresco areas, fire pits and relaxed background beats which constitute to a restful, holiday mode atmosphere.

The flooring plays a big part in deciphering the tone, as you imagine sandy feet skipping across the decking, the sound of pebbles rustling as someone enters the washrooms, and heels clacking on tiled floors. Again all material choices which complement the beach-house / poolside feel.
